The apparatus
The apparatus - a design machine.
This is about designing a system that can create for you. It is an experimental set up to create visual surfaces or objects where the outcome is random and not predictable. You can build up on something you did for the "no design" assignment.
What is important:
-The system can have very different shapes, it can be a machine you build, different tools that you create as well as using existing structures or phenomena and everything else you can imagine -The system must be applicable several times and create a variety of outcomes by following a clear set-up and order - The outcome must be something visual that can be digital or physical
‘The apparatus’ is a work about the strength and power of ‘change’. Change of time and place. Placing materials in a changing environment, one material after the other always in the same tide line. But there is no same tide line because every tide line is different to the other.
‘Tide line: the mark or line left by the tide when it retreats from its highest point’
The environment is changing because wind, light, sound, Rain etc is changing. The apparatus is always the same, but the ‘outcome’ is random and not predic- table.
How much does the tide line take back into sea? And what stays behind? What do the patterns look like of the ‘staying behind’? The works are traces of staying and passing. It may be gone when I move on. The forms are forms of movement.
Every work is different because the place is completely different in Spirit and scale. The work is the result of the coming together, precisely in that place and moment, of these elements. Therefore, because there was nothing included that wasn’t there before.
