Introduction:
This project is about the Bauhaus in Germany (1918 - 1993), but from a critical perspective. The Bauhaus was a pivoting point in the history of Modernism, and founded by Walter Gropius. At first Modernism rejected Classicism and Realism and embraced abstraction. TheModernists had a utopian wish to desire to use their works to create a better world. They constantly pushed the notion that left its ideals, with the attached social belief, design and art, had the power to change society.
Modernism strove to bring art, design, and machine together, using the machine (or the machined) as a powerful symbol for the movement.
I tasked myself through out this project, to unearth and criticize in a scathing, humanistic, and absurdist manner.
The chair is a 1 on 1 replica of the Bouwhaus design. The chair responds to presence. Whenever the sensor detects presence in front of the seat, the seat moves backwards. So when you want to sit on the chair, it move away from you.
