Introduction:
A final performance by Anouschka Vreeswijk and Nine de Wit.

A semester project about ‘Kind of Life’ Inspired by one of the four elements Earth, Water, Air and Fire.

With this installation influenced the state of water by means of human presence and movement.
As a result, humans are not only suitable for control, but this medium (water) simultaneously acts as a mirror of our human presence.

WHAT MOVES US: MEANING
Since the early 1900s, many glaciers around the world have been rapidly melting. Human activities are at the root of this phenomenon. Specifically, since the industrial revolution, carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gas emissions have raised temperatures, even higher in the poles, and as a result, glaciers are rapidly melting, calving off into the sea and retreating on land. Even if we significantly curb emissions in the coming decades, more than a third of the world’s remaining glaciers will melt before the year 2100. When it comes to sea ice, 95% of the oldest and thickest ice in the Arctic is already gone. If ocean and air temperatures continue to rise rapidly, the Arctic could be ice free in the summer as soon as the year 2040.

What happens in these places has consequences across the entire globe. As sea ice and glaciers melt and oceans warm, ocean currents will continue to disrupt weather patterns worldwide. Industries that thrive on vibrant fisheries will be affected as warmer waters change fish will die. Coastal communities will continue to face billion-dollar disaster recovery bills as flooding becomes more frequent and storms become more intense.
People are not the only ones impacted. In the Arctic, as sea ice melts, wildlife like walrus are losing their home and polar bears are spending more time on land, causing higher rates of conflict between people and bears.

1: ‘THE EARTH IS BLEEDING’
The melted dripping red water shows the earth bleeding.
2. ANYBODY, EVERYBODY
So Time is ticking, Strong action on climate change is important and means preparing communities for impacts that are happening now. But it also means looking to the future, focused on reducing the heat-trapping gases in our atmosphere that will bring damaging consequences as our planet warms.
The good news is that individuals can play a big part on both fronts with just a few simple changes. Everybody has the ability with their concessions to take immediately part to challenge their behavior.
“ Challenge your behavior! ”
“The earth is bleeding, the wound needs surgery to heal!!!”

With this installation we want to influence the condition of the water through human presence and movement. This makes people not only suitable for control, but at the same time this medium (water) functions as a mirror of our human presence.

Environment:
The installation is located in a dark, pitch dark space where no outside light is possible. In the center of the room is the installation (artifact).
The artifact consists of a glass see-through display case. This display cabinet is closed on all sides except at the top. Above this display case hangs a red colored block of ice by means of rope and mesh. There is a light source in this block of ice. Close to the ice there are heat guns / fohns that (when they are on) melt the ice.

SENSOR 1:
Measures the amount of people present in the room. This amount of people becomes visible because the power of the heat is stimulated in the amount of heat. This amount of heat ejects the heat gun towards the ice. The more heat the heat gun emits, the more the ice melts.

SENSOR 2:
Sensor 2 measures the distance of the presence of people. The closer someone is to the sensor, the harder the light source will glow.
